We are starting to head west again today. Leaving Katherine, heading towards Western Australia. It is a bit over 500km from Katherine to Kununurra; just on the other side of the border. The two day drive will take us across the mighty Victoria River region.
The highway sets out from Katherine across flat grassland plains before the rugged, red ranges appear on the horizon.
At first the mountains are flat topped with plain slopes...
Then the dramatric red rock surfaces...
A super dramatic landscape...
About two-thirds of the way to Timber Creek we cross the fabled Victoria River...
We arrive at Timber Creek early afternoon. Just in time to secure one of the last caravan sites for the night. The caravan park is not bookable, it's a first come, first served basis.
The next morning we are up before dawn to drive to Policemans Point Lookout on the banks of the Victoria River for a sunrise shoot...
We time it perfectly...
We had some reports of good birding spots at Timber Creek. One is at the water tanks (leaks) a bit up the hillside above the town. The road is sealed but steep, narrow and very windy. On the last hairpin bend we lost traction and spent a 10 hairy minutes on the edge of the escarpment until we were able to reverse down far enough to get a run up. We made it finally, but we were emotionaly scarred. Thankfully there were some birds to compensate for our near death experience...
The Policemans Point Lookout also returned some new birds for us...
After our adventures in Timber Creek we are heading to Kununurra for a few days. The escarpment around Timber Creek is still very scenic.
We are now entering Boab country.
A Boab forest along the roadside...
